Ni Ulos Penghit Halong, which means that binding fibers on the stem and stem-binding ulos affection among others.

At first Ulos function is to warm the body, but now Ulos has a symbolic function for other things in all aspects of the Batak people. Ulos not be separated from the life of the Batak. Each ulos has 'Mercury (art)' on their own, it means having the nature, circumstances, functions, and relationships with certain things or objects.

In view of the Batak tribe, there are three elements are based in human life, namely blood, breath, and heat. Two previous element is the gift of God, while the third element is not the case. Given the solar heat is not enough to ward off the cold in the living Batak tribe, more so at a time when the night. According to the Batak tribes view, there are three sources that provide heat to the men, the sun, fire and Ulos. Ulos function gives a healthy body heat and pleasant thoughts so we happily made.
Among the Batak often heard 'mengulosi' which means giving Ulos, or warmed with ulos. Batak people in trust, if (Tondi) also needs to 'diulos', so that the hard mans soul has the properties of masculinity and Heroism, and women have the endurance properties against Witchcraft and infertility.

In the case 'mengulosi', there are rules to be followed, among others, people should only be those who think 'mengulosi' Underneath 'kerabatan (friends / family)', for example, parents may 'mengulosi' children, but children should not 'mengulosi' parents. So in principle Batak Kinship called 'Dalihan Na Tolu', which consists of elements boru hula, and dongan sabutuha, a sam boru was not justified 'mengulosi' hula. Ulos given in vain 'mengulosi' should not, either in kind or how to make it.

As one example, 'Ulos Ragidup' which will be given to Boru who will give birth to her Eldest son that should meet certain requirements, namely ulos called 'ulos sinagok'. To 'mengulosi' officials or guests of honor, 'Ulos ragidup silingo', ie ulos given to those who can provide protection (mangalinggomi) to others.
